‘Original Music’ Is The Trend

‘More original music!’ is the recurring refrain in rehearsals and at jams with backup and support musicians.
They say ‘original music’ challenges them and they ‘can’t get enough of it’. Audiences support this trend. Original shows and refreshing entertainment is what people are looking for.
One songwriter tells of how he was removed from a well-known Calgary stage at a jam when trying to play his second original song. That was eight years ago. Times and trends have changed and now venue managers are arranging their weekly bookings around and for original acts.
The beginnings of the ‘oldie cover tunes’ that we enjoy on the radio, date back to the fifties. Teenagers today know the songs of their parents from Rock and Roll, Abba to the Beatles and Johnny Cash. Some critics say the chords and words have all been used so there is nothing original left. Not true. As times change, topics and news, which is grain for the mill, inspire lyrics that provoke thoughts and ideas about today. Advancing technology enhances and shapes new sounds and recordings can become as perfect or raw as the artist chooses.

ENERGY 101.5 Supports Calgary Musicians...

Those who value original music eagerly await for the ideas to spill out on paper and from the voice box, shaping, entertaining and reflecting what this generation has to say. Some poets identify a cities connection to their art and music as a sign of its greatness. In a city where the people support the arts, an oasis springs up and everyone prospers. Economically, a songwriting community contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars conducting their music business locally. Hiring musicians, recording studios, production costs, web sites, space rentals, office supplies, instruments and upkeep of instruments are just part of the list of their continuous costs. They also share their gifts of music, often for free at fundraisers, weddings, funerals, church and so much more, weaving their presence into the fabric of community.
When songwriters live here, music lives here; stimulating energy of prosperity and creativity that ripples throughout the venues, schools, businesses and even on the grassroots level, the family.

For music to continue to live here, songwriters have to be nourished. When they are fed, whether spoonfuls of recognition, or abundant cups of payment for an evenings work, the whole community benefits.
The songwriters on calgarysongwriter.com bring a colorful mix of genres and personalities. We are proud of the talented community of songwriters in Calgary and we hope you will come to appreciate the contributions we make within our city.
