Exciting Initiative by the Calgary Library and CalgarySongwriter.com
An exciting initiative by the Calgary Library and Calgary Songwriter.com is planned for January 2008 to raise awareness of local songwriters.
The library is setting up a distinct display of Calgary and area songwriters’ work so library patrons can ‘take out’ their CDs, listen at home, visit their web sites and maybe even become a fan. “Although there is already an impressive music display at the Central Library in Calgary, there is no way of knowing which CDs, snuggled up between the Beatles and Dylan, are local talent so they are easily overlooked. Having a separate display that celebrates our community of local songwriters is a great idea” explains songwriter Phyllis Wheaton, one of the co-volunteers with Doug Faires, web master of calgarysongwriter.com.
The library is further promoting local artists with noon hour Tuesday and Wednesday showcases in the Central Library, 616 Macleod Trail SE from January 8 to January 30.
From Fluffy the Pitbulls’ Klezmer style social and political commentary-filled lyrics to the inspirational works of Anthony Burbidge with songs for the’ innerspace explorer’, or the Jazzy originals of Jessica Erlendson, and Tim Hus’ western Canadiana, it will be an entertaining lunch hour for anyone browsing at the library or brownbagging over lunch.
