Blind Beggar Original Music Showcase (OMS)
Press Release

Host :   Blind Beggar Pub – 106, 5211 Macleod Tr SW
Sponsors :   Big Rock Untapped, X929fm, Music Center Canada,
                        The New Black records
Special Mention:   Musicliveshere.ca and Love It Live Merchandise Inc.

A little history: The Blind Beggar Pub is owned and operated by two local musicians (Patrick Ballard & Doug Dumelie) who have been in the restaurant industry for a combined 40 years. The concept of the pub is to fuse great food, drink and service with music, and particularly local indie music.

The original Blind Beggar is located in Whitechapel, London, England and was the hangout of the famous gangsters “The Kray Twins”. It also was the starting place of the Salvation army and was named after the famous Blind Beggar of Bethnal, whose war torn, riches to rags story has been told for many decades.

The idea of this event has been in the works for years as the owners have wanted to see a re-surgance of original music since the inception of the pub. With the help of sponsors we have been able to put together an event that will help push original music to the forefront of the the Calgary live music scene.

When: Every Sunday starting February 10 until Sunday, March 30
OMS Private Party Saturday April 5th, 7pm – close

What is the event: This is an exposure based event that gives bands the opportunity to play for the chance to get radio airtime interviews, airplay (if CD is good quality), prizing and play at a high exposure gig and much more.

How does it work: Bands play a one hour set of all original tunes in front of audience and judges. The bands are rated according to criteria and judged by qualified judges. The results are posted on the Blind Beggar Pub website (www.blindbeggarpub.com). The top three bands with the best overall scores will be awarded prizing and exposure accordingly and will play at the OMS X929 private party on Saturday April 5, 2008 at the Blind Beggar Pub.

Judging: Bands will be judged by a panel of music industry judges based on the following criteria.

1) Stage Presence
2) Individual Musicianship
3) Content/Songwriting/Hook
4) Originality
5) Crowd Response

Prizing: Bands will all receive swag from sponsors just for getting up.

*The first place band will get the headlining spot for the OMS X929 private party, $500 Recording Studio credit and $500 music store credit at Music Centre Canada on 37th st SW, swag, interview on X929 exposure program, air mentions and airplay (if the CD is good quality)
