PAT HATHERLY
PAT HATHERLY
*Tell us a story behind one of your songs*.

I'd like to tell the story behind my new c.d. "Songwriter's Dream". The official release date is 14th February, 2009. There are eight other women participating on this theme album. Each one chose a song from my catalogue. The only requirements were that they do it as if they were going to put it on their next c.d., it had to be airplay ready, and they couldn't re-write the basic song. Other than that, the sky was the limit. On the two songs that I'm singing, I let the studio decide on the direction. I have been so impressed with every song that I've gotten back. I knew that I had to kick these songs out of the nest, but I never dreamed how quickly they would fly.

*What do you listen to when you are at home?*

I listen to all genres of music. I review a lot of songs in a week, and there are many styles out there.
*Who or what has influenced your writing significantly?*

That's a tough question. It would be easier to list what doesn't influence my writing and the answer to that would be "nothing". Every song I've ever heard, every person I've ever worked with, and everything that happens is an influence.

*What highlight in your songwriting/performing could you share with us"

That would be the new c.d. "Songwriter's Dream". This has been the biggest project I've ever taken on, and the most amazing.

*What have you learned that you could pass on about songwriting/performing experience?
Pay attention. You never know what might trigger your imagination. Here's an example. Several years ago, I was driving back to Calgary with my friends, Jim and Bev. Somewhere in the conversation I asked how long it would take to get to Calgary. Bev jokingly said: "Do you want the truth or a lie". I said: " Don't tell me the truth, tell me what I want to hear". And a song was born. It's that simple. You have to get out there and do it if you want to be a good performer. You can practise a song until you're blue in the face, but until you do it on stage, in front of an audience, you don't know it. Oh yeah, and skin as thick as an elephant doesn't hurt if you're working the bar scene.

*Any tips or advice you could give to songwriters?*

Do it. Just do it. Write every day if you have the time. Hone your craft. Don't give up.

*What plans or goals do you have for the next year?*

I'm going to release "Songwriter's Dream" and then I'm taking some time off.

*Where can we buy your CD?*
