FLUFFY THE PITBULL
NICOLE CHAPLAIN-PEARMAN
*Tell us a story behind one of your songs*.

I got inspired to write the song "We Hate Your World" when I got the flu. I was flopped on the couch feeling sniffly and crabby and idly thinking " I hate this bug! I hate feeling sick! I hate the sun, the moon, the air etc." This kind of morphed into it's own rhytmic cadence and so, from a virus, a song was born.

*What do you listen to when you are at home?*

I listen to most music in the car and change radio stations a lot. I also have CDs on hand when nothing seems to interest me. I like classical mainly Renaissance, Baroque choral stuff; Alt rock, punk, metal, prog rock, industrial and surf music. Anything that rocks and is kind of dark and strange; Minor keys are my middle name so I've always loved Jewish music which up until about 10 -15 years ago was a lot harder to get. Thanks to the "net" my addiction can now be satisfied. I also like drum music from various parts of the world, especially if it includes a lot of low pitched drums. Some blues and jazz if it has a strong sense of "beginning, middle and end" I get impatient with the highly improvisatory, rambly stuff.
*Who or what has influenced your writing significantly?*

See above. I guess more concrete examples would include bands like Tea Party and Faith No More. Their lyrics are odd and Tea Party used a lot of world music in their melodies.

*What highlight in your songwriting/performing could you share with us"

I think playing on A-Channel a was a big highlight. Everybody says playing on TV is horrible because the lighting is harsh and they feel intimidated, but this wasn't like that at all. I really lucked out with the production crew.

*What have you learned that you could pass on about songwriting/performing experience?
As corny as this sounds I'd say be the best "you" can be. Believe in what you do and never, ever try to be someone or something you're not. Phony seems to be the thing people find most irritating about a writer/performer.

*Any tips or advice you could give to songwriters?*

Try to get other musicians to play your songs with you from time to time. You'll be surprised at how your songs take on a life of their own when you let them loose amongst a group of musicians. Make sure though that the people you do this with like your work.

*What plans or goals do you have for the next year?*

I plan to make my second CD this year.

*Where can we buy your cd?*

My CD is available directly from me. You can contact me through the site. Axe music has a few copies and so does St. John's. You can also download the CD through kerfmusic.com, which is right here in town, or download singles from just about any major download service you can name as CDBaby.com has hooked me up with a bunch of these. (You can also get the hard copy CD through CDBaby.com, but you'll have to shell out in US bucks if you do that.)

P.S. I also have tickets for sale for the Feb.24th show of the Emergenza festival at 8 p.m at the Underground This is a global batlle of the bands in which 13,000 bands will be competing in venues worldwide.
I'm the first act on . There'll be several other local acts as well. If you, or anyone you know, would like to come out to one crazy rock & roll show and support local talent to boot, e-mail me for tickets at $12 a piece. They'll be $15 at the door so get while the gettin's good!
