CORT DELANO
CORT DELANO
*Tell us a story behind one of your songs*.

“On the Ground” is a bull rider’s prayer, moments before the chute gate is pulled.

*What do you listen to when you are at home?*

In my CD player right now are Cowboy Junkies “Trinity Sessions”, Manu Chao “Clandestino”, Richard Thompson “the best of”, Woody Guthrie and Led Belly on “Folkways”, and R.L. Burnside “Come On In”. On my record player is Waylon Jennings “The Dark side of Fame”. In my tape deck in my car is Bob Dylan “Free Wheelin”.
When it comes to the radio I usually bounce from CKUA, CJSW and the C.B.C.
Spoken word is also great to listen to…Jack Keruoac….Barbara Adler (from Vancouver)
*Who or what has influenced your writing significantly?*

The Bob Dylan documentary “No Direction Home” is Apocalyptic. Completely changed my views not only on Bob Dylan but the music/art he surrounded himself with. So I went out and read his book Chronicles and it swung the inspiration door wide open. From The Beats, to Woody, Thucydides, Robert Graves and the Muse have all significantly influenced my writing. Humanities, History and Literature are the 3 majors of influence.

I am currently reading “The Essential Poems of Pablo Neruda”

*What highlight in your songwriting/performing could you share with us?*

The Wildest show I have performed at was in Ottawa, while on the Perpetual Motion Roadshow. (an indie tour featuring a spoken wordsmith from N.Y., an M.C. from Halifax and myself) Earlier in the day I sang my Canadian song “Beaver Tale” on Parliament hill. I thought that was pretty cool until the real show started. The place was packed. There I sang in front of 30 people while behind me and around me hung sex toys, strap- ons whips, masks, and so on. The sex shop was our biggest audience of the tour in the ever respectable capital of Canada. Something I will not forget.

*What have you learned that you could pass on about songwriting/performing experience?
When starting, songwriting/performing is like a new baseball glove: Looks good but doesn’t fit so well. It is something that needs time, attention and to be used. Put some oil on there, work it in. Use it for softball, hardball, or playing catch with friends and before

*Any tips or advice you could give to songwriters?*

Those who are still writing songs in five years will be the persons writing the songs.

*What plans or goals do you have for the next year?*

I had my CD Release Party for “Sad Sorry-ass Folk Singer” on Friday, April 20 2007, at the Ironwood. Then a short tour to Saskatchewan and B.C. I plan to focus my performing this summer in Alberta. I have plans to get involved with the folk alliances of North America, looking for alternative opportunities to perform. I would like to start on the next

*Where can we buy your CD?*

The best place to by my CD is at one of my shows, but they will be in Megatunes and Sloth Records here in Calgary and for the rest of the world you can find it on CDBaby.com.
