ABOUT House Concerts
An Old Fashioned House Concert :
Hundreds of years ago minstrels moved from community to community telling stories and documenting, through song, places and events happening around the country. There was a natural sharing of ideas and story telling of things far away and different people and cultures. This interaction peaked curiosity, raised awareness, and even bonded hearts as fellow countrymen and women learned about others in their kingdom.
Nowadays :
A traveling singer/songwriter is invited to perform during their musical trip throughout the 'kingdom'. There is a sharing of ideas with the music and story-telling about other people and places in their 'kingdom'. The modern minstrel provides an evening of live and original entertainment in exchange for a small cover or donation (worked out ahead of time with the host).
A house concert gives the musician an opportunity to perform, interact and sell CD’s to help cover travel expenses. It also gives the audience a chance to be patrons to the arts.
“Most of the worlds great art (and music) was made possible by patronage: an aspiration beyond the profit motive: “
Denis Sequin (Role Reversal, Sept 13-26, 2004 Canadian Business Magazine)
How to set up a House Concert
Start with contacting family, neighbours, co-workers and friends you know will enjoy original music. There are many connoisseurs of music who are thrilled to
experience ‘new’ original lyrics and compositions as well as support singer/songwriters in Canada. It is also a fun time to share a musical experience with others.
The audience should know ahead of time
1) of a patronage cover charge or donation agreed to with the singer / songwriter (ranging between $5.00 and $20.00)
2) cd’s will be available that night (if applicable)
3) the music will be original ( so they don’t start requesting Elton John)
The event can be arranged in any creative way but often is a shared pot luck supper with the least amount of stress on the host/ess.
The host/ess invites up to 20 people who enjoy original music.
