"KerfMusic" Brings Local Songwriters
  The Exposure They Need

David Broderick runs an Indie music website called KerfMusic.com based right here in Calgary, Alberta. He is often asked if he’s a musician, and why he started such a website. He explains that he saw the need to bring eclectic original music created by independent musicians to the forefront giving them exposure . David has been indirectly involved with the music scene, as a volunteer at the Calgary Folk Music Festival for a few years prior to starting KerfMusic. David says, “I have always enjoyed listening to live music and going to music festivals. My professional background is in Information Technology, so it made sense to me to start KerfMusic. I do not play a music instrument.” David also explains what KerfMusic is all about and how songwriters can benefit from his web site.

What is KerfMusic?

KerfMusic is a music download site. Music is sold by the album, and prices vary depending on the amount of songs per album and the release date of the album. On average, pricing is based on 75 to 80 cents per song, however this will be revised in 2007 to reflect higher market prices. We do not sell the physical CDs- this is a 100% download site. Songs could also be streamed, but our format is a little different from the many sites out there. There are no 30 second clips – we will stream two of your songs in their entirety.

Is it legal?

Yes, this is legal. All the music on KerfMusic is sold with the consent of the musician/artist. There is a contract involved, which includes a royalty split, so you get money every time your album is downloaded. Every transaction is tracked and the artists gets paid every 3 months. Those that purchase the music have to agree to not make your music available on p2p networks (uploaders), or to use it for commercial (to sell it mostly) purposes without your consent. Yes, this is hard to control. However some non-personal information such as IP address and web browser are logged to troubleshoot system/network problems, and this may help us track offenders.

What kind of music do you accept on KerfMusic? Does it cost anything?

We like to keep things as open as possible, and therefore we do not limit the music genres on KerfMusic. This is not to say that we will accept all music that comes our way. The quality of the recording is an important factor, as well as the number of songs on the album. We prefer full length albums, but if you have a 6 song EP , then we would like to listen to it. There is no cost involved when joining KerfMusic – we only require you give us your album. Last but not least, the music has to be original(you wrote it and own it), and if not, then used with permission of the owner of the the music.

How do you advertise your website?

This is a question that many people have asked me. Developing a brand name takes time and patience. This is not done overnight, and it may generally take a few years to get broad brand recognition. Our approach is an incremental, no hype one. Our focus right now is Alberta, but our ambition stretches beyond the borders of this great province. Our marketing initiatives range from being involved with music festivals, to advertising in arts and entertainment weekly magazines, to community radios. We also want to make sure the artists on KerfMusic are found on the Internet.

I want to have my music on KerfMusic. What do I need to do?

It's simple. Drop me an email. Call me. Mail me the CD. Whatever works for you. I'll get in touch with you and we'll take it from there. We can also meet if you're a local artist. We're open minded, and if you have any ideas you'd like send our way, please do so. Feedback is always appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers David Broderick
