Saskatchewan Songwriter-Performer Brenda Baker to Launch Nexstage: Live Music Performance Coaching
Original news release date: October 5, 2007
Hundreds of talented songwriters and musicians will flowed into Moose Jaw on October 18 when the Western Canadian Music Awards conference kicks off. The same day Brenda Baker, a mainstay of Saskatchewan's music and literary scene, will officially open a new business that targets music star hopefuls. It's called Nexstage, and it's Baker's answer to obviously talented musicians who need more education about how to put on a great show.
"I began singing my songs in public 28 years ago," says Baker, "and everything I've learned about the art of music performance was through trial and error. In my first few years it would have made a huge difference if I'd had a mentor... someone to give me feedback on my live shows."
Brenda Baker aspires to be that kind of mentor to emerging talent in the province, and in future, take her message beyond Saskatchewan's borders.
"I began this whole mission by giving an intensive workshop in Edmonton at the 2001 Prairie Music Awards. There was a large turnout, and I knew from the evaluations that I'd struck a chord. People are craving this. Historically, industry conferences have consistently focused on song writing and selling recorded music, but the art of giving a great show? Completely ignored until very recently. And yet, for the vast majority of musicians who aren't on radio, ultimately it's the live show that sells the songs."
